Medical tourism profile for the Bahrain

Bahrain tour

The Kingdom of Bahrain has always kept the good health and well-being of the people their topmost priority. The country possesses world-class medical facilities.

The medical treatment in Bahrain is easily accessible for everyone as they provide advanced and world-class facilities. The health system is segregated into two parts; public and private. Health care is free of charge in the public sector for Bahraini citizens while non-Bahrainis are charged with a nominal fee. It is further broken down into primary, secondary, and tertiary care.

The services offered in public healthcare are of a high standard, especially if we compare it to the other countries in the region. Highly qualified and trained medical professionals are available to offer top-most treatment.

While private healthcare is mostly opted by the foreign worker after it was made compulsory for employers to provide private health insurance for the expats in January 2019.

Medical tourism in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has been on the rise for the last few years but still hasn’t reached the level of big destinations such as Asia, Europe, etc. It is mainly due to a lack of facilities and strategic planning. Bahrain does have the potential to provide the same level of services as in the big countries and attract patients from all over the world, but only through proper planning.

According to Medicaltourism.com, Bahrain welcomes more than 2 million tourists per year. Now to turn this market into health tourism is what the country is looking to develop in the coming years. It could be the gateway to proper health tourism in GCC countries which could ultimately grow into a hub in the future.

Currently, Dubai and Saud Arabia lead the way in the Gulf as they have enough medical facilities to cater to the mass population. The main reason for Bahrain to stand behind is that the healthcare demands present in the country are no doubt enough and of high quality for the people living there but are not sufficient to tackle a huge number of tourists. Another reason is the lack of budget provided to the healthcare system by the Bahrain government.

In order to divert the traffic and attract more people from the world, Bahrain is aiming to establish a separate sector that will promote medical tourism. A proposed land has been set for various healthcare projects while Bahrain is also considering opening international branches of worldwide recognized hospitals. This will not only endorse the objective but also provide new job opportunities for the citizens.

Once the aforementioned plan comes into action, Bahrain will also look to hire medical specialists from abroad to provide services in the country.

However, how much Bahrain can profit from this potential totally depends on the proper implementation of the plans put forward. Although Bahrain has established itself as one of the most popular healthcare destinations in the Gulf through smart strategies but to challenge the big countries would be the real task.
